When Export Markets Slow Down, Post-Harvest Preservation May Be Vietnam’s Saving Grace

In the face of growing global trade uncertainty, Vietnamese agricultural exports—once booming under agreements like EVFTA and RCEP—are showing signs of slowdown. According to recent data, in the first five months of 2025, fruit and vegetable export turnover reached only USD 2.3 billion, a 13.5% drop compared to the same period last year. This comes despite a strong 28% growth in 2024, when the sector reached over USD 7.1 billion.

So, what’s going wrong?

Experts point out that the issue is not at the farm level or with product quality, but rather with post-harvest and logistics bottlenecks. In the agricultural supply chain, the weakest link isn’t cultivation—it’s what happens after harvest. Once produce leaves the farm, if it’s not stored and transported correctly, its value can evaporate within days.

Current challenges include logistics costs accounting for up to 30% of total product value, post-harvest losses reaching 20–40%, and shipments being rejected due to spoilage, premature ripening, or failure to meet quality standards during transport.

Today’s export markets—such as the EU, US, Japan, and South Korea—demand not only clean and safe food but also consistency, extended freshness, chemical-free preservation, and traceability. Post-harvest preservation is no longer just a supportive function—it is a competitive strategy.

That’s why CASS (Controlled Atmosphere Storage System) has emerged as a transformative solution. CASS applies CA technology, which precisely controls levels of oxygen, carbon dioxide, humidity, and temperature in the storage environment—extending shelf life by two to four times without using chemicals. With this method, fresh produce retains its color, texture, and flavor, while post-harvest loss is reduced to below 5%.

CASS also integrates this technology into refrigerated containers, enabling long-distance shipping by sea—cutting costs and maintaining product integrity throughout the journey.

This means businesses no longer need to rush sales under pressure. They can store produce longer, wait for better prices, and expand into new markets with confidence.

In a fluctuating global market, sustainable export cannot depend solely on seasonal harvests or reactive market demand. It requires long-term strategies: smarter storage, streamlined logistics, better quality control, and technological readiness.

CASS is committed to being that reliable partner—helping Vietnam’s agricultural sector unlock its full potential and bring high-value produce to consumers worldwide, from farm to table.
