According to the Export-Import Department on May 23, the Chinese Customs Authority has announced that certain types of fresh dragon fruit from Indonesia are now permitted for import into China, as they meet the enhanced phytosanitary requirements.
The approved dragon fruit varieties include:
- Purple-fleshed dragon fruit (Hylocereus costaricensis)
- Red-fleshed dragon fruit (Hylocereus polyrhizus)
- White-fleshed dragon fruit (Hylocereus undatus)
According to the announcement, the sorting, processing, packaging, storage, and transportation of dragon fruit to China must be inspected by the Indonesian Food Quarantine Agency or authorized individuals.
Although dragon fruit is not native to Indonesia, its cultivation in the country has been steadily increasing since 2000. Dragon fruit production now spans nearly the entire country, with major production areas in Jember, Pasuruan, Malang, Lumajang, and Banyuwangi in East Java.
Most of Indonesia’s dragon fruit is consumed domestically, with only a small portion being exported. Indonesian dragon fruit growers can supply the market nearly year-round, with red-fleshed dragon fruit being the most commonly grown and favored by local consumers.
Due to the high consumer demand for dragon fruit, the cultivation area in China has expanded significantly in recent years. The area devoted to dragon fruit cultivation across China has increased more than tenfold within a few years.
In Guangxi Province, China’s top dragon fruit producer, the cultivation area and production are expected to reach 20,000 hectares and 500,000 tons, respectively, in 2020. Experts note that China’s dragon fruit production primarily consists of red-fleshed varieties and is concentrated in the latter half of 2020.
